Societal Expectations of Gender in the Elizabethan Era

Looking through the lense of Elizabethan England, gender roles and expectations are reviewed in this essay. Using a critical analysis of speeches from Queen Elizabeth I, I have structured this essay to ask how we as a society react to the way that people do or do not fit into the gender binary we have constructed. First this essay looks to the past to understand how women were expected to behave in society. This sets up the groundwork for the later discussion on the female characters of The Tempest. Viewing the reactions of others to the actions of Miranda and Sycorax helps us identify the way we treat others and what we can do to act more thoughtfully.
